Inside the bubbler is a solenoid type cartridge which can be replaced if the bubbler stops working due to frost damage or contamination.

Once the bubbler cartridge has been isolated installation is simply a matter of removing the large nut and brass ring on the bubbler and then swapping the faulty cartridge. The brass ring has two holes in which the specially designed bubbler spanner fits to unlock.

Often provided by charity groups and benefactors, there are numerous examples of exterior drinking fountains in public areas in certain areas of the Western Cape.

This drinking fountain was found on the Alphen Trail in Constantia, Cape Town. Donated by the Varsity Old Boys Running Club, the fountain has a plastic bubbler and has been built in stone with a rugged finish. The soak away is into the ground around the drinking fountain, and could maybe have been done a little more professionally with an enclosed gravel area which would stop the ground around the fountain becoming muddy.

A nice example of what can be done in public spaces to allow people to hydrate on the go.

The quality of the grade of stainless steel is very high and built for external use – although it can suit perfectly for internal usage. The stainless steel itself is 1.7mm thick – which is a very high width and means that this product is rock solid.

Considerations for installation

1) Proximity to waste water – the pipework for waste water is hidden more in the fountain with the shroud as shown in the photo below.

2) Water Filters – We strongly recommend the installation of one of our water filters when installing a fountain like this. This is normally installed on the other side of the wall from the fountain – and is changed on a six monthly basis. It is a 0.5 micron filter

3) Height – these fountains can be installed at different heights for different parts of a school where there are children of different ages.

4) Water – often these fountains are installed where there were previously water taps and therefore bringing water the fountain is not difficult

5) Maintenance – It is important to change the filters six monthly but this is a simple process for maintenance staff when they receive the replacement filter in the post. For more regular maintenance we recommend simply washing down the outside of the fountain. There are small button parts on the bubbler that may be need to replaced if someone aggressively misuses the fountain – we stock all these spare parts.

Not many public places in South Africa give access to drinking water and this has led to a widespread use of small pack water – with the obvious environmental impact. Strangely at the cricket we saw the first example of a recessed fountain serving the public in an area where drinks and food are purchased.

The Perranporth Golf Club came to us after one of the clubs long standing members had sadly passed away.  After having spent so much time at the club the family wanted to donate something special to the club in his memory.  They agreed on having a custom made fountain installed in the grounds of the club, and to have the fountain made by a local monumental mason.  The results are impressive, not only does the fountain look fantastic but as you can see in the photo the placing of the fountain gives a fantastic view of the course and the surrounding landscape.  The work was done by local monumental mason R Pascoe & Sons, click on the link to view some of their other works.

This is a great example of how drinking water fountains can be used and designed in a way which goes further than simply providing water for it’s users, and can be a touching monument.
